Solar systems, moons and exomoons

We study the formation and dynamical evolution of Solar-system bodies, including minor planets, satellites and planets.

Below are some examples of our moon-forming giant impact simulations.

Simulation of an Earth-moon like formation from a single giant impact

The initial 13 seconds show the hydrodynamical simulation of the impact. The results are than handed to an N-body solver to follow the long-term evolution of the debris and the formation of a single moon. The simulations and the movie were made by Uri Malamud from our group, as part of our study of the formation of the Earth-Moon system.

Simulation of a collision between two super-terrestrial planets, and the formation of a massive super-terretrial planet with a small exomoon companion

. The simulations and the movie were made by Uri Malamud from our group, as part of our study of the formation of exoplnanets and exomoons.
